Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs (C or above), including Maths, English and Science (or Adult Literacy and Numeracy Level 2 or successful completion of a Level 2 course with Functional Skills Maths and English). (Accepted Science equivalent - Merit at BTEC First Diploma)
  • Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements will be assessed on an individual basis by the Curriculum Manager and Curriculum Direct

Curriculum

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science (forensics) consists of 6 mandatory units. The six core units are:

  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Scientific investigation
  • Scientific practical techniques
  • Perceptions of Science
  • Mathematical tools in Science

There are a further 13 specialist units that include:

  • Chemical Laboratory Techniques
  • Forensic Evidence Collection and Analysis
  • Criminology
  • Using Statistics for Science
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Traffic Accident Analysis
  • Criminal and Psychology
  • Applications of Forensic Psychology
  • Forensic Fire Investigation
  • Physiology of Human Regulation and Production
  • Criminal Investigation Practice and Procedures
  • Criminal Investigation Practice Procedures

There may be an additional research project integrated over 2 years for certain students, which at the end counts for the equivalent UCAS points of an A/S level. The content and title of the project is up to the individual learner, but will be based firmly within the science arena.
