Curriculum

The full Master's course comprises 180 credits divided into three 60 credits stages: Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Masters. Students work incrementally through the three stages and must pass all modules at each stage in order to progress to the next.

While there is inherent flexibility to your studies, the course has three core modules:

  • Engineering Project Management
  • Professional Development Appraisal and Continuous Review
  • Research Investigation, Planning and Methods for Change

If you're planning to take the MSc study course and use it to provide the academic part of your portfolio of evidence for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, check with the relevant professional institution that your module selection meets their requirements.

To achieve the MSc you'll require eight 15-credit modules from Professional and Short courses, including the core modules, and must complete the 60-credit dissertation module.

Dissertation

You also undertake a substantial independent research project and dissertation, based around either a project from your workplace, or on industry-based case studies. This helps you understand how your learning applies in the real world. This aspect of your MSc requires you to reflect on the implementation of your project, and evaluate opportunities for improvement.

You will have academic and normally industrial sponsors for this, to help you put the project in the required context.

This type of project is attractive to employers, as it provides an opportunity to deal with a real issue efficiently and cost-effectively. Often, your project will have a significant effect on the business sponsoring it.
