Entry Requirements

  • GCSE: For all applicants, Grade C or above, or Grade 4 under newly reformed GCSE grading, in English Language and Mathematics, or equivalent. Please note the University does not accept Level 2 Key Skills, Functional Skills or Certificates in Adult Numeracy and Literacy as suitable alternatives to GCSEs.
  • A-level subjects: No specific subjects required. Points from A-Level General Studies and AS-Level subjects (not taken onto full A-Level) can be included towards overall tariff. You must have a minimum of two A-Levels.
  • Relevant subjects: Business
  • EDEXCEL (BTEC) Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • Access: Achievement of the Access to HE Diploma; to include 30 level 3 credits at merit.
  • Baccalaureate IB: No specific subjects required.

English Language Requirements:

  • If English is not your first language, you will be required to meet the UK Border Agency and Universities minimum English Language requirements such as the International English Language Test (IELTS) overall score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component. 

Curriculum

Year 0 (Foundation Year)

  • Becoming a Professional
  • Introduction to Organisations, Enterprise and Management 
  • Economics and Accounting for the Real World
  • Introduction to Law in a Social, Business and Global Context

Year one

In the first year of the course, you will be introduced to events and key business functions, and develop the intellectual and practical skills associated with making the transition from studying at school or college to studying at university.

  • Meeting the Management Challenge (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • Understanding Business and Financial Information (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • Understanding the Principles of Marketing (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • Engaging in Critical Business Enquiry (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • Events in Context
  • Understanding Organisations and People (Marketing, Events and Tourism)

Year two

In the second year of the course, you will be exposed to more specialist knowledge within the fields of events (planning and management) and business studies. You will also develop higher order academic and professional skills through research enquiry and the following compulsory professional practice modules.

  • Managing People (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • The Business of Events
  • Planning and Managing Events
  • Methods of Enquiry (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • Financial Aspects for Marketing, Events and Tourism

Plus one of the following optional modules:

  • Good Business, Bad Business and Sustainability
  • Integrated Marketing Communications
  • Entrepreneurship and Small Business

All students are encouraged to spend their third year on placement. The curriculum in the second year provides support for the process of securing this in a business and events related context.

Final Year

In your final year, you will complete a major enquiry or work-based project, testing your ability to independently produce a substantial piece of research work. You will also specialise in modules and elements within modules in accordance with your interests and career aspirations, with a particular emphasis on learning through reflection and managing complexity and change. Additionally, you will acquire the knowledge and vital experience of staging and evaluating a live event.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Critical Business Enquiry Project OR Enterprise Project OR Work-based Enquiry Project OR Applied Business Project OR Business Project
  • Contemporary Issues in Tourism and Events
  • Strategic Management (Marketing, Events and Tourism)
  • Staging and Evaluating Events

Plus two optional modules from the list below OR one if a Study Year Abroad (SYA) or Placement Year has been completed:

  • Marketing Services
  • Organisational Leadership
  • Project Management
  • Entrepreneurship: Ideas and Practices
