A SUCCESSFUL REGIONAL CONGRESS FOR WORLD MENTAL HEALTH!

SINGAPORE – The inaugural Asian Regional Congress of the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) has come to a successful close, and Raffles Singapore is proud to have hosted hundreds of regional and international delegates, at the landmark conference launched by Minister of Health GAN Kim Yong.

Kicking off at The Fairmont Singapore on the 1st of October 2015, the three-day congress brought together numerous stakeholders within the field such as voluntary welfare organisations, grassroots organisations, caregivers, and government agencies, providing attendees the valuable opportunity to cross-share ground-breaking mental health care practices, with experts in the mental health and allied professions.

“The networking and sharing of our model in Singapore with others, as well as the learning from them was definitely one of the most important highlights of the conference,” said Professor Fatimah LATEEF, Member of Parliament, Marine Parade GRC.

Moving to the Raffles Singapore campus for the final day of activities, workshops were conducted by esteemed experts in the field – including a session by Professor Ros BRAMWELL, jointly organised by Raffles Singapore and the University of Chester, United Kingdom.
“The pace of the conference has been excellent, with lots of good opportunities to network with colleagues from around the region and beyond,” Professor Branwell shared.

The Raffles connection however, does not just stop there. Our very own Dr Monica WALET, Academic Director of Raffles Singapore co-chaired the local organising commitee for the landmark conference, alongside luminary Raffles alumnus Porsche POH, currently the Regional Vice President (Asia Pacific) of World Federation for Mental Health, Executive Director of Silver Ribbon Singapore and winner of Singapore Woman Award 2013.

In-line with our philosophy in Raffles Singapore to provide valuable exposure to opportunities for our students to network and learn from the very best in their respective fields, numerous Raffles students attended workshops, or even volunteered for the congress.

Mohan SUBALI, a student volunteer shared, “My role was to be an aide for the speakers, which gave me the opportunity to not just learn from them, but also mingle with delegates from different fields and all across the world. I learnt a lot from my role, and I would like to thank Raffles Singapore for giving me the opportunity to do so. Indeed, it has truly been a wonderful journey.”

“The research presented gave me a much better understanding of the topics discussed, and provided me with substantial knowledge on differing cultural perspectives. Getting the opportunity to meet and speak with her also allowed me to better structure my dissertation for my degree here, alongside invaluable career advice on my options after graduation. It was a great learning experience to have attended the workshop facilitated by Professor Ros Bramwell, and I’m grateful that Raffles Singapore has provided us with such fantastic learning opportunities during our course of study,” said Syafiqah Binti YAHYA, Raffles Psychologist.
