Monday, March 20th 2017 saw curious students exploring their future at the Brickfields Asia College (BAC) PJ campus. Accompanied by their parents, these students were exposed to the various pathways available to them upon completing their pre-university courses. This one of a kind education fair also included presentations from representatives of BAC’s prestigious partner universities in the UK thus giving perplexed students a holistic understanding and a detailed picture of what their education pathway had to offer.
‘’I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do upon completing my A-levels but attending the Education Fair broadened my options,’’ said a 19 year old A-levels student, Prajna. ‘’Being able to speak to the representatives from UK itself gave me a clearer picture of what each university has to offer. It made my decision process for choosing a university to study in much easier,’’ she added.
The BAC Education Fair was particularly helpful for those interested in exploring various aspects of business and legal education as BAC offers a plethora of related programmes in these fields. Consultants and faculty members from BAC and its world-class partner universities in the UK and various professional bodies were available for one-to-one counselling sessions with regards to pursuing a degree in the fields of business and law and provided first-hand insights into studying in the UK. Students were also given detailed information on full-time, part-time and distance learning programmes including financial and merit scholarships.
In conjunction with the BAC Education Fair, BAC also hosted a Career Day for law students. Four well-known law firms, including Zaid Ibrahim & Co., SKRINE, Shook, Lin & Bok, and Jayadeep Hari & Jamil offered BAC students and graduates opportunities for internships, employment and advice on practicing law in the real world thus adding value for students looking to read law.
‘’I have always wanted to work with Zaid Ibrahim & Co as I have heard a lot about them, understanding their requirement and getting offered an internship opportunity is beyond what I expected,’’ said Second Year UKT Law Student, Joshua Lawson Cowie.
CanLaw, an all-new lawyer discovery platform, was another participant at the BAC Career Day. According to Loo Soon Yi, Founder & CEO of CanLaw, "CanLaw is a legal-tech startup that helps members of the Malaysian public find lawyers.”
What makes CanLaw unique is the method used for lawyer discovery on their platform. Up until now, the public could only find lawyers either through word-of-mouth or referrals from bankers and property agents due to the very limited marketing means available to lawyers as a result of the strict publicity rules that govern the profession. That notion has driven CanLaw to be in the business of innovating the legal profession – to help people find the right lawyer at the right price; and to provide lawyers with legal means of being discovered by clients.
“Instead of a standard directory whereby users will be required to browse and individually contact lawyers for quotations (or visiting law firms physically one by one), users are able to send in their legal issue and compare up to 5 legal fee quotes and lawyer profiles just within a few clicks on our platform. That we believe is what makes us different” continued Loo Soon Yi.
