Entry Requirements
Degree and/or experience:
- Current or planned involvement in the teaching of medical students and/or doctors. A first degree is not essential but evidence of three years professional experience will be required. Applicants with recognised education certificates may be eligible for a shortened route.
English Language Requirement:
- Students for whom English is not a first language must demonstrate an acceptable standard of comprehension and communication in the English Language (IELTS: minimum overall score of 7.0 and 7.0 for the writing element).
Curriculum
The three core modules worth 60 credits are normally studied in one academic year.
Learning and Teaching in Medical Education and Pedagogical Practice in Medical Education are both four-day modules which run consecutively during semester 1. Advanced Communication Skills and Strategies in Medical Education runs in semester 2 over five days.
Areas of study
On this course, students will:
- explore how to facilitate medical education bridging the boundaries between undergraduate and postgraduate provision, primary and secondary care, and other groups of health professionals
- examine learning in both academic and practice settings
- explore the notion of the 'self' in teaching, and develop and enhance teaching skills
- gain an overview of the importance of communication in professional practice and medical education, and develop relevant skills
- explore the philosophy and values of patient and learner-centred education and practice
